| Paul Hetherington of Great Hadham Golf and Country Club (pictured with club captain John
Woodbridge (left) and PGA East Region secretary John Smith) won the Knebworth Classic, sponsored by Variation Holdings, with a blemish-free second round of six under par 64 which swept away the opposition.
The 40-year-old was delighted to have made the breakthrough having finished as runner-up in PGA East Region order of merit event three times in the past six years.
Hetherington started four shots off the pace. He said: “I have never really scored well at Knebworth in the past. I took a driver and managed a par at the difficult opening hole and was four under at the turn while I was still under the radar of the Sky television cameras.
I had a bit of luck to find my ball after a wayward drive at the ninth but two more birdies at the 12th and 13th put me six under for the tournament. I picked up my final birdie with a solid four at the par five 18th hole to go seven under. Then I had to wait while the final seven groups came in.” Hetherington has been at Great Hadham for 16 years after starting his career at Bushey Hall and then Batchwood Hall. “I will be playing in the final three order of merit events this year and hope to secure a top three finish so that I can take part in the Titleist PGA play-offs in Turkey on November 21 to 23.” |
