Dear Golfer,

For me, the most enjoyable part of being a golfer (all be-it not a very good one) is the pure enjoyment to be gained from playing a new course for the first time.

Whilst I can see that turning out to your local golf club with friends every week for the “roll-up” is preferable to trimming the hedge or cutting the grass, there is nothing to compare with playing a new course!

I have been fortunate to play golf across the UK and in far flung places in my time. And nothing compares with driving up and parking in a car park of a course never before visited. I accept that setting a new course record is pretty remote and you also probably need a bucket full of balls but it’s great to discover the joys of a new golf course.

We have been publishing the Golf Society Directory for the last 20 plus years and once again it is jam packed full of great society deals and some fabulous courses for you to visit. I have it on good authority that the sun is going to shine consistently from August through to the end of the year so no excuses from anyone for not getting out and playing lots of new golf courses!

Grenville's Club of the month is Minchinhampton (Old) Course, Gloucestershire

The golf course has evolved over 100 years and its natural contours and the absence of bunkers give it a special character which is seldom repeated elsewhere. The initial impression may be that the course is wide-open but after a few holes it is evident that the St Andrews factor applies and that positional play is very important. The numerous humps and hollows around the greens test the golfers ability to play a variety of shots - often in difficult conditions. Recent course modifications have been carried out in concert with the National Trust (who are responsible for the commons) with the primary aim of making the course safer to the general public and in particular, some greens close to the main roads have been relocated. details of course and card can be seen by clicking on the Golf Course menu item.
