20 - 20 cricket / 9-9 golf or oblivion!
As the "names" of the last decade are starting to take their places in the Hall of Fame, it is fascinating and exciting to see a new breed of young golfers starting to break through. We all know that young golfers need heroes who are their contemporaries, or the game will shrivel and die. So this is all good news, no?
I don’t think we can be complacent. I love this sport but we all need to ask ourselves - how do we get more young men and women taking up golf (see Golf Factor story from the Midlands for one possible solution)? The PGA and other lead groups still appear to be out of touch with youth culture and I think we do need a NEW type of game based on the 20-20-cricket model, any ideas?
“Oh dear “I hear seniors bewailing. But fact is that if the game does not adapt for the next generation then it will be left behind. Let's hope the Ryder Cup throws us some new young heroes, that could start an upsurge and lead the way for the golf of the future!
Tenby (pictured), one of the favourite golf courses of former Welsh Ryder Cup winning captain, Dai Rees, has built new modern academy facilities all thanks to The Ryder Cup coming to Wales. Tenby is the oldest golf club in Wales and one of the players' favourites. It is about to host the Welsh Amateur Championship and the Ladies British Strokeplay Championship.
The practice and learning facilities have been brought up-to-date to match the quality and history of the links course, with a new three hole starter area added, thanks to an £80,000 grant from the Ryder Cup Wales Legacy Fund. The Tenby club has strong links with The Ryder Cup and the third hole is named after Dai Rees, the winning, playing captain at Lindrick in 1957, the only victory for Great Britain and Ireland since 1933 – with the next American defeat coming when a European team won at The Belfry in 1985.
It's great to see the Ryder Cup having such a positive effect on golf in Wales and hopefully using the past to inspire the future - that is after all the result that we all want.
