Harriet wins Frilford salver

Hertfordshire’s Harriet Key won the Frilford Heath (pictured) scratch salver with a level par total for the 36-hole event. Harriet set the pace in the morning round on the Red course with a two-under 70. She followed up on the Green course with two-over 72 – just enough to withstand the challenge of 14-year-old Wiltshire champion Kyra Horlock, who shot an afternoon 68.

Harriet, who plays at South Herts, is a Hertfordshire county player and a past winner of the South East and Hertfordshire girls’ titles. She was among the qualifiers at last month’s English amateur championship at Broadstone.

Birdie treble sees Sullivan extend successful run

Andy Sullivan (picture © Tom Ward) maintained his highly successful start to the season when he won the Lagonda Trophy after a head-to-head battle with Liam Burns at Gog Magog Golf Club, Cambridge. The man from Nuneaton carded a closing round of 69 for 269, 11 under par, to pip Burns by a shot despite the Kent man’s finale of 68. Joint third on 274 were Phillip Ridden from City of Newcastle and England international Jamie Abbott, who lost a playoff for the same title a year ago, both with closing 66s. It was Warwickshire champion Sullivan’s third round 64, one off the amateur course record, that set up his success which followed victories in the Hampshire Salver and Midland Closed, runners-up spots in the West of England and Selborne Salver and fourth place in the Duncan Putter.

Social times at Spalding

Spalding Golf Club Third team's first match of the season, a social match against the Ladies ended in a 8-5 win with three games halved, with the highlight of the day, a hole-in-one by Doug Garfoot on the par three 155yd 9th hole. His seven iron into a strong wind helped him and his playing partner Mark German to a narrow victory over Anita Cross & Maureen Orwell. The third team, captained this year by Pete Williams with Kevin Siddle his vice, led the team well winning their game against their counterparts from the ladies, Jackie Bailey & Eileen Bridge.

The Bank holiday texas scramble competition was again well supported with 28 teams of four out on the course. The winning quartet with a nett score of 53.2 was Jane Toal, Lisa Howling, Keith Moore and Doug Garfoot, with Di Sanderson, Irene & David Brotherton and Neil West on 55.5 taking second spot. Third place went to Carol & Keith Holland, Rowena Hughes and Albert Jacobs with Jo & Steve Wade, Jackie Bailey-Scott and Trevor Laud in fourth place.

Shropshire golfer wins Midlands North regional medal final

Shropshire’s Deborah Austin swept into the inaugural EWGA Grand Medal Final when she won the Midlands North regional final with net 65 at Brocton Hall, Staffordshire. The competition series is run in association with Volvo.

Deborah, who finished six shots clear of the field, leads 10 qualifiers for the Grand Medal Final which will take place at The Worcestershire Golf Club on 26 June.

She came back last June with a handicap of 26 and by the time she teed up at Brocton Hall she had reduced to 19. Now, a further cut is on the way which will help her pursue her current goal.

Her caddy at the regional medal final was her father, Paul Austin, who originally introduced her to golf. She had two gross birdies and four pars during her round and scored 14-over gross 84. “I’ve had a marvellous day, everyone at Brocton Hall was so welcoming and the competition was very well organised by EWGA,” said Deborah.

This was the first of six regional medal finals which are contested by players who each returned the four best medal scores at their club during 2009.

90 years of golf at Hawkstone

THIS YEAR Hawkstone Park celebrates 90 years of golf being played on what is arguably one of the most picturesque inland courses in England and where Sandy Lyle learned his game. The Hawkstone course opened for play on 1st May 1920 when the then owner, Sir William Creswell Gray a ship owner from West Hartlepool, built the course at the request of the ladies in his family so they could amuse themselves during his long absences from Shropshire! The course has changed little since that day apart from the introduction of the 12th Moat signature hole which was created at the suggestion of James Braid. To celebrate the 75th anniversary of the course, the 18-hole Championship course was opened in 1995 together with a six-hole academy course.

Like most Clubs Hawkstone has membership vacancies but at playing level it is thriving. The Club has recently won the Shropshire & Herefordshire 2009/2010 inter-club Winter Scratch Foursomes event - the Hargrove Trophy - for the third time in the last seven years and the fifth time ever and its junior section goes from strength to strength. During the season the Club runs very popular Veterans’, Seniors’, Mixed & Juniors’ Open competitions for which a few spaces are still available. Greetham meets the Spring
THE seven rounds of the winter league competition at Greetham Valley were completed at the end of February. The winners of the Saturday league will now join with the winners from the Sunday league and to compete in the quarter finals in March. The winners will then go forward to the semi's on the Sunday of the following week. The finalists are; G. Hollick/G. McNaughton Vs R. Tarrant/J. Burdall A. Edwardson/T. Broom Vs O. Hayward/A. O'Connor P. De Kremer/D. Lister Vs C. Bradbury/P. Dickinson and S Stevenson/A. McNaughton Vs G. Sharpe/M. Williams.

Making a mark

Chapel-en-le-Frith Golf Club in Derbyshire has been awarded the prestigious GolfMark Club of the Year Award. The club impressed judges with programmes to encourage both juniors and adults into golf, while creating the kind of welcoming environment that serves as an excellent advertisement for the game. Representatives of Chapel-en-le-Frith received their GolfMark Club of the Year accolade during the England Golf Partnership’s County Development Conference in February.

The English Golf Union (EGU) and English Women’s Golf Association (EWGA) introduced this award to recognise those facilities that have shown an outstanding and innovative contribution to junior and beginner golf. During the last year Chapel-en-le-Frith Golf Club has reached out consistently to schools and the community and fostered a friendly, family atmosphere at the club. Juniors compete regularly with adults and adults enjoy a mentoring ‘buddy’ scheme. Junior coaching sessions and competitions are regular events, while growing links with local schools provide a pathway to encourage new youngsters to develop their golf at the club under expert supervision.

The wetter the better!

Greetham Valley Golf Club's Pro. Neil Evans of just loves playing in the worst of conditions, or so it would appear, it seems to bring out the very best from him.He made a habit of producing a number of scintillating scores in the worst of conditions during the 2009 season and it looks as though 2010 is going to be no different.

Whilst three quarters of the field enjoyed, sublime weather conditions at the amazingly sun drenched Stoke Rochford Golf Club.A late tee time ensured that Neil played his final 6 holes in freezing temperatures, high winds and hail. Not what he would have chosen.

However, the terrible conditions that he endured didn't seem to affect a very cool, or was that cold? Neil Evans, as he posted a magnificent 43 points (7 under par) to finish 3 points clear of the chasing pack.

With three excellent scores of 40 points posted on the leader board, Dan Greenwood (Forest Pines) Andrew Hare (Silk Willoughby) who won the 2009 summer Stoke Rochford Pro Am and Kevin Crossland (Worksop Golf Club) could have been forgiven for thinking that they had done enough to claim joint first prize.

However Neil had other ideas, and birdies at the 1st, 2nd, 6th, 8th, 11th, 12th and 13th meant that Neil just had to hang on in the worst of the conditions at the end of his round to post a winning score.

Oswestry drive in!

Delayed by the recent bad weather, Oswestry Golf Club’s Captain for 2010 David James was finally able to drive into office on Saturday 13th February supported by members and club officials.

Following the drive-in ceremony, he enjoyed an 8 to 5 result in the traditional match against the Secretary’s team. Our picture shows from left to right Ladies Captain Judith Thornell, Seniors Match Captain Bill Littler, Club Captain David James, Junior Captain Will Jones and Club Vice Captain D John Evans pictured at the Drive-in.

Macey joins Norwood Park

Bert Macey, is on the move after over 17 years at Ramsdale Park Golf Centre, in Nottingham. He will be joining the team at Norwood Park in Southwell as Club Pro working with the new General Manager Paul Thornton.  Macey is a past Captain of the Midland PGA and Notts PGA and is highly regarded within the region for his commitment to golf development.

Sir John Starkey, Norwood owner said “ I am thrilled Robert is joining us, we have a very strong management team in place which will ensure Norwood Park surges forward over the next few years”

A good start

The new year at Oswestry Golf Club has started well for both club member, Margaret Ratcliffe and our PGA Professional Jason Davies. Margaret, who is chairman of the Shropshire Ladies’ Golf Association took a lesson from Jason, who has been appointed England Academy County Head Coach by the Shropshire and Herefordshire County Golf Partnership.

Gaining instant results from her  tuition, Margaret used a five wood to ace Oswestry’s 136 yard seventeenth hole in her very next competition – the seventh ace of her career. Both Margaret and Jason’s county-wide roles of developing and coaching the game involve them with the new County Golf Partnership. So it was appropriate that Mark Taylor,PGA Professional and newly appointed County Development Officer visited Oswestry recently to congratulate Margaret and Jason on their joint successes.
