Last minute Liz shares victory at Brokenhurst |
Ladies European Tour regular Liz Bennett made the most of a last minute call-up to share victory with Jon Le Roux (Oris Medical) and Paul Jones (Canford Magna) in the Brokenhurst Manor GC Pro-Am on Friday (10th June). Liz, who represents Brokenhurst Manor on the Ladies Tour, was practicing her putting at the Club when she was asked if she could step-in at the very last minute and play in the Hampshire PGA Order of Merit Pro-Am. Within an hour she was on the tee and on her way to recording a one-under-par score of 69 that was matched by Le Roux and Jones.
South Winchester’s Richard Adams took fourth place with a level par round of 70. Former Ryder Cup player Steve Richardson (Lee-on-the-Solent) won the Pro-Am with his team of Peter Price, Martin Rudderham and Paul Baxter after a back nine count-back. Their twelve-under-par score of 128 was matched by Roger Tuddenham and his team of Rohan Glyn, Tony Locke and Pete Egerton. Third place went to Parkstone’s Martyn Thompson and his team of Gregg Briton, Stuart Cox and Brian Sweeney (129).
Other prize-winners included Richard Macro, Keith Morris, Ian Wallace, David Jones and Steve Wilson. In all 35 teams took part in the Tournament, which was organised by home Professional Kevin Saunders. |
Forget the birdie, I've got a doggy! |
Good heavens ... paws for a mo and read this shaggy dog tale !! Goodwood Golf Club is acknowledging the importance of “man’s best friend” by offering an exclusive membership category for dogs. Yes you are not suffering from a surfeit of brandy-laced mince pies - it’s a fact. The Kennels Dog Membership has been established at the 36 hole venue for all breeds and every canine membership subscription is donated to the Battersea Dogs and Cats Home which cares for more than 10,000 less fortunate animals each year. More than 40 owners and woofers have eagerly signed up for the one off £50 membership. Benefits include a personalised dog bowl, tasty and healthy treats on request, clubhouse access (when accompanied by owner) and seasonal walk maps (for dog or owner??) round the 12,000 acre Goodwood estate.
More importantly, there are no long waiting lists or formal interviews required or a strict dress code, just a request from the management to “paws for thought” and ensure best behaviour at all times and to refrain from drooling over attractive doggies of the opposite sex, barking, chewing furniture and chatting noisily to other members, human or canine. Elsewhere, despite the economic down turn, Goodwood’s credit membership launched in 2006 is proving popular to new members. This appealing form of “pay as you go” golf starts from just £370 with 25 credits which can be used on either course. The concept is simple, as a member of Golf At Goodwood, you only have to pay for the amount of golf you want when you want it and new members also receive two tickets to the Festival of Speed and discount of food and beverage at The Goodwood Hotel.

Heath host 2011 Senior’s Open |
Walton Heath Golf Club will host The Senior Open Championship for the first time from July 21-24, 2011, 30 years after the Surrey venue staged a historic Ryder Cup. The Senior Open Championship returns to the south of England for only the second time, following the success of the 2009 Championship at Sunningdale where American Loren Roberts beat Mark McNulty of Ireland and another American, Fred Funk, in an exciting play-off.
Walton Heath’s place in history was sealed in 1981 when it became the first European venue to host a Ryder Cup between a combined European Team – rather than Great Britain and Ireland – and the United States. Thirteen members of the European and United States Teams from that year played in The 2009 Senior Open Championship and many are expected to return to the course for next year’s Championship, including 2009 European Senior Tour Order of Merit winner Sam Torrance who made his Ryder Cup debut at the venue. This year’s Senior Open Championship presented by MasterCard will also be played at a new venue from July 22-25, 2010 when it visits Carnoustie, where Watson won the first of his five Open Championships in 1975. |
