GOLD WINNER

Brett Fewell, a 14-handicapper from Surrey, was the most shocked and surprised man at Woodhall Spa after coming up on the rails to win the Fuller's London Pride EGU Gold Medal.

Three points behind at the start of the day, Fewell signed for 36 points in his second round over the Hotchkin Course for a total of 69, one better than Ryan Shrimpton from Yorkshire and two clear of third placed James Bloomer, the overnight leader.

After being declared the winner, Fewell said: “I’m shocked. I didn’t think 69 would be good enough. I felt I would have to shoot at least 70 but it wasn’t easy out there.  This has been a big challenge because although it was harder than yesterday it was still windy. We get it windy at Reigate so I suppose I’m used to it and I hit a low ball.”

Bloomer, 20, from County Durham, enjoyed a slender one point lead after the first round but he could only add 31 for third place on 67, one behind Shrimpton, the Yorkshire 16 year old, with a second round 33.

The best return of the second day was 39 points from another 16 year old, Scott Heap, a four-handicapper from Ferndown in Dorset, who had four birdies on his card in a gross 72, one over par.  That hauled him up the leaderboard but only into equal sixth place with 65 points, four adrift of champion Fewell.

The London Pride EGU Gold Medal is part of a five year deal between Fuller’s and the EGU which supports amateur golf and provides greater recognition to clubs and their members

DENHAM DELIGHT

Hampshire’s Katie Mundy  became the English open mid-amateur championship at her first attempt when she beat Sussex golfer Hannah Ralph 2/1 in a low-scoring final at Denham.

“I am so happy,” said Katie, 19, who was made an honorary member of Denham Golf Club. “It’s been a long time coming. I had a really good season two years ago and I felt I should win something good – but then I went off the boil.”

Between then, the two players had seven birdies and two eagles as they traded blows in a final which kept spectators enthralled.

Hannah appeared to be in charge over the early holes but the players were all square after Katie two-putted the long par three 5th to win the hole.

She then launched a remarkable charge when she holed a nine-iron for an eagle on the 6th and followed up with three birdies in the next four holes. She was three up after 10 and four up after she parred the long 13th. A steady four on the 17th was enough to claim the title. “When Hannah came back at me I just dug deep and tried to get pars and birdies,” said Katie, who was an England girl international. “I enjoyed it!”
