OVER £100,000 RAISED SO FAR... |
Woodlake Park Golf Club recently presented this year’s charity cheques totalling a fabulous £10,015. As usual the Club held the Judy Wood Charity Day in June, where teams of 4 players competed for a large array of donated prizes. In this popular event all the players entry fees are donated to charity, which ensures the maximum amount possible is raised for the area cancer hospital, Velindre in Cardiff. This is augmented with collections on the bar and a raffle on the day.
Also, for the first time this year some 39 members of the Club & their friends also took part in a cycle ride from Brecon to Woodlake Park. Despite what was probably the worst weather of the Summer, with great determination and commitment all cyclists made it home and raised over £4,700 in the process. Half of this was donated to St. Anne’s Hospice in Newport, while half was added to the amount raised on the Judy Wood day and presented to the Velindre appeal.
This years efforts by the Club means that almost £110,000 has been raised for charity since Judy Wood started the fundraising effort in 1998. For more information about Woodlake Park please click here! |

SENIORS’ GOLF AT MONMOUTH |
The inter-club fixture-list gave the senior golfers at Monmouth (click here to visit the Monmouth Golf NOW webpage) the opportunity to get their 2011 season of competition off to a flying start. With April home fixtures against Belmont, Creigiau and Raglan, Captain Chesney Britton was hopeful his players would make the most of home advantage. They didn’t disappoint and three consecutive wins were recorded against these visiting opponents. Belmont went down 6.5-1.5 to the home side with Creigiau losing 6-2 and the local derby match against Raglan resulted in a 5.5-2.5 win for the hosts. The seniors’ first away match in early May took them to the scenic hillside course at Pontypool where they encountered perfect conditions but tough opposition which outscored them 6-2. Hopeful of a return to winning ways when they played host to Lydney in mid-May the seniors were surprised to come off second best to a visiting side which outscored them 4.5–2.5. St. Pierre also proved too strong on their home fairways despite a spirited performance from Monmouth Seniors who recorded 3 wins out of the eight matches in the contest. The last fixture on the May schedule is a home match against Ross-on-Wye.
The first domestic Trophy competition of the year for seniors produced a tussle between Phil McFarlane and Ian Lewis. In this individual stableford competition for the prestigious Rose Bowl, both scored 39 points with Phil getting the decision on count-back. Graham Laws came in third with a score of 38 points, just one point ahead of Terry Rogers in fourth place.
Our picture shows Seniors Captain Chesney Britton presenting the trophy to the victorious Phil Macfarlane.
A much anticipated forthcoming June event for the Monmouth Seniors is the Captain’s Away Day. The venue the Seniors’ Captain has chosen to take his players this year is Chipping Sodbury Golf Club, a picturesque course that nestles at the foot of the Cotswold Hills. |

Rhys Wins Irish Amateur Open Championship |
Seventeen year old Welsh golfing prodigy Rhys Pugh completed the biggest win of his career to-date in May, claiming the Irish Amateur Open Trophy from Gordon Stevenson in a three hole play-off at the Royal Dublin. Having led from day one, Rhys had held a 3 shot lead going into the final round but Stevenson clawed his way back into contention, culminating in the three hole play-off.
Pontypridd-born Rhys is one a several talented golfers at the Vale Resort whose development has been supported by the Vale’s Golf Academy. His coach David Llewellyn, former World Cup winner and Wales National Coach, is one of the Vale’s stellar team of five PGA coaching professionals who are dedicated to nurturing young talent. David says ; “This is a fantastic achievement for Rhys. His success is an accumulation of hard work over time and learning how to handle himself when the situation gets a bit tough as it did yesterday. Rhys’ biggest asset is his wonderful temperament on the golf course and his work ethic. This may be his biggest win so far but I have no doubt at all that there will be many more to come.” The Vale Resort in Hensol near Cardiff, launched The Vale Academy in 2008 to put a development structure in place for young golfers. |
